Golden Rose takes Olympic title
Team GB added to their gold rush on Sunday, with Justin Rose taking the title on golf’s return to the Olympics.
In a tense tussle with Swede Henrik Stenson which eventually saw the pair coming down the 72nd hole level, Rose held his composure to drain the decisive birdie putt while Open Champion Stenson 3-putted to finish with a bogey 6.
American Matt Kuchar posted the best round of Sunday with an 8-under 63, which was enough for him to take bronze for team USA.
The win moves Justin Rose back into the world top 10, while Stenson’s strong finish sees him overtake Rory McIlroy into 4th position.
There were strong finishes for Sergio Garcia, Rafa Cabrera Bello and Belgium’s Thomas Pieters, who will all continue their quest for a Ryder Cup place in the coming weeks before the points lists are finalised on August 28.
Golf’s involvement in the Olympics will now switch focus to the women’s competition, which gets underway this Wednesday. New Zealand’s Lydia Ko is favourite to take home the gold medal, closely followed by recent Ricoh British Women’s Open winner Ariya Jutanagarn. Expect the Olympic golf course to provide a stern test to the best in the women’s game just as it did the men.
